ok I just bought both and I’m at the point where I need to wrap this up and get it rolling on the tracks however I need to know if you still have to replace the 1.5v bulbs (or use resistors) with the DH163AO? I know that with the old digitrax decoder for this model (DH150A) you did have to replace the bulbs or use resistors but I know that some (if not all) the DH163 line is true plug and play, meaning no bulb replacement neccessary.
So, I’m hoping that someone out there has figured this out already. Help.
Thanks folks!
oh yeah, what do you all think about the AG SD70M? Good, Bad, indiff…??
Dropping Resistors are required with this decoder unless you change out to 12 volt bulbs. The only decoder in this line that has resistors integral to it’s design is the DH163LO.
I have 2 of the original run AG SD70M’s and to this point have had no problems with them. It has been noted here and on other forums that some of these locomotives have a problem with warped trucks. These apparently lead to derailments and have made a lot of people shy away from this loco. (early runs anyway!) I’m not sure, but I would think that Athearn would have the problem fixed by now.
Thanks for the info, can you direct me as to what rating of a resistor 1/4 watt? etc. etc. I have spare bulbs already cuz I connected one resistor to a light and tested it and it blew (obviously the wrong size resistor). Your further advise would be greatly appreciated.
I used 1k 1/4W resistors in my Genesis SD70m’s. (Lenz Gold decoders)
Although i don’t have a lay-out yet, it worked fine on my test track.
Best regards
