does the digitrax super chief set ready to go as purchased right out of the box, or does track power supply have to be purchased separately?

You’ll need a power supply. Digitrax sells one, and check Tony’s for others. I just ordered a Magna Force from them. Haven’t got it yet, but the discussions I have seen are all positive.
For the Super Chief, you’ll want 5-6 amps and the voltage will depend on the scale you are using. 12-14 is good for N, 14-16 for HO.
