If I have a loop powered by a 180w powerhouse that I run only command locos on do I need a direct lock on? I already have the command bace and cab-1 on another loop that is powered by a 180w powerhouse and tpc 400. The outside rails are conected on both loops. What dose the direct lock-on do?
I’m sure someone will step in here with more knowledge. The command base and Cab-1 are for the signaling and the power supply is the power that runs the train. The lock-on is one method of getting the power from the transformer/power supply to the tracks. If you already have one and the train runs then I’d say no, but if the one loop has no power and the train won’t run, then that’s the reason.
Direct LockOn is a protection device. It has circuitry in it to prevent problems with your trains and your power supplies. As to whether you “need one”, that is a personal choice. I just acquired my first one and I’ve been running CC for almost 10 years (but I’ve also been careful/lucky) without one. The newer units do not have the tubular track lock on built in.
