I have an updated “what I did” on directional layout lighting at:

Harold,

That is a joke, isn’t it? Those things are great for taking pictures, but they sure produce a LOT of heat!

Darrell, heatedly quiet…for now

dgwinup, I can attest to what Harold says. I used Harold’s lighting methods and I am satisfied. I have ten of these spread around my 15 x 19 layout in the garage and they produce very, very little heat. I can touch the reflectors when they are on. Per info on the package, 10 of these energy efficient twisties are only consuming ~ 2.0 amps

The bulbs in the reflectors are only 26 watt flourescents rated at a 100 incandescent equivalency. They produce little heat and lots of light. Beats a couple of lifeless shop lites with their dull flatness.

Thanks for trying my idea, Tom.

The only bad thing about most flourescent lighting is that it tends to suck the color out of whatever you’re looking at. I use a flourescent bulb called a “sunshine” bulb in that it reproduces natural sunlight. It lights everything up like high noon. The only drawback is that they’re expensive. Two bulbs (each four feet in length) cost over $14.00, but the result of using it is beautiful. They’re cheap at twice the price!

I use Floresent Natural lighting and i think it brings out the layout more so it gives it a more natural light instead of hte blinding yellow light out of ordinary bulbs. And the lights almost never burn out i had mine for 1 year or two with out a problem. Only thing i hate on you lighting, non offense, is that lighting is so close to the layout and it kinda distracts you when looking at it
