directional lighting?

what is directional lighting? what does it do? is it cool?
I am getting a athearn challenger and i want to know everything about it.

Ben.

Directional lighting involves having headlights (and sometimes taillights) that come on in the direction of travel - when you go forwards, the front headlight comes on, when you reverse, the rear headlight comes on. On DC locos this is achieved with diodes, but when you switch to DCC this isn’t necessary (most DCC-ready locos are designed so that when you plug in a decoder it bypasses the diodes) - decoders have directional lighting control built in. Hope this is of use!

thanks.

Simple. Make the train go forward, front headlight comes on. Make the train go backwards, rear headlight goes on.
