Dirt roads

Does anybody know how to make dirt and off-road roads? please help thanks.

The Kalmbach book on scenery by Lou sassi has some pretty good tips.

also, the Kalmbach book by Dave Faray has a good method: cut strips of cardboard in the width and shape of the road, cover them with sculptamold or plaster or that plaster-impregnated gauze, let it dry, paint with earth colored paint, sprinkle on the dirt, while it’s stillwet run a car or truck back and forth on it to make “ruts” if you want, and let dry.

Last night I received the December issue of MR. It had an article on scenery construction including a dirt road.

I use the clay dirt from baseball fields. My dad’s a coach, so I have ready access to all the dirt I need; I imagine you could get some from any field in your neighborhood. This method gives you kind of a tan color, so this may or may not fit your layout’s geography.

I use real sand for my dirt/gravel roads. Make ruts in it with the eraser end of a pencil, and maybe put in some very small pebbles. Lay bits of ground foam next to it, and spray the whole thing with ACC.
