Dirty Old Norfolk Southern GE 9-40CW

Hello Guys,

I have taken my first shot at weathering a locomotive. I got a N.O.S. Athearn “Blue Box” for free and proceeded to throw just about every Details West and Diesel Details piece that I could find at it. It came out pretty good, but I decided that it just needed something else, so I broke out the air brush and gave it some heavy use. What does everyone think?

throw that puppy on the head end of a train with some scenicking around it, and it’ll look just about as real as they get!

It looks amazing!!!

Looking good!!

a real life example

River_Eagle, Thanks for the ‘quote’ !

I saw others that were more weather matched to the OP’s unit.
I tried to also look beyond the photo of the model, the flash & background may have not given us the best representation of the OP’s work.
However, I can say, it’s much better than a lot of what I have attempted, & in my opinion, nicely done.

  • I’d run it !!!

I live by NS Sandusky Line and 98% of the locomotives are clean except the normal road dust and grime along the trucks, bottom of the plow and fuel tank.

However, the other 2% looks just like the OP’s model.Great job!

If one notices while railfaning today’s locomotives is kept in good cosmetic condition except for very small percentage.

Thanks Guys. I live on the Mon Line in Pittsburgh, specifically the part that typically only runs coal trains to and from the mines. I would have to say that it is about a 50-50 split on the cleanliness of the locomotives, so I went for a typical dirty example what I see just about every day.

That looks great parts323.

You must be the final destination for the fully loaded NS trains that go thundering past me as I live South of Pittsburgh. Actually I have NS on one side of the Mon, CSX coal trains on the other side of the Mon, and Wheeling & Lake Erie going over the Mon with mixed freight locals…[:P]…LOTS of rail action.

Your weathered loco looks great btw [Y].

Happy modeling!

Don.
