Disgusting green hoppers

No, not toads.

I’ve just got 6 Walthers 100 ton quad hoppers in disgusting CNW green. I think that with weathering they should come out about the way these cars look in photos.
They are almost emerald green but matt not shiny (which is a start).
How do I tone down the impact of the colour itself?
Does anyone have any ideas?
(No I’m not going to switch to CSX/UP/NS/whatever [8D])

Thanks in Advance [:p]

David,

What if you used a “rust” wash. I use a 50:1 ratio of 70% alcohol and PolyScale Rust. On metal objects it looks like rust; on painted surfaces (like rolling stock) it looks like a dusty coating of dirt.

I use a small broad bru***o apply the wash, being careful to thoroughly mix it beforehand. And you can apply it as thin or as thick as you like. That should tame down that green you love so much quite nicely.

I’d put some Road dust on them, and then Leave them as is. I like my Green[:)]

If CNW green is so nasty, why did you buy them?

Most CNW green is the really good dark green, like the old yellow it looks great. Together they look superb.
Zeto yellow was pretty disastrous but okay until it faded to dead puss colour.
These green hoppers really look YEUK but they are right and part of the scene. for me that is part of the fun of the whole thing. [:p]

I like the CNW Green and 1980’s Safety Yellow.

Atlas has done the best color matches.

What I have a problem with is that sometimes these HO Scale CNW Hoppers end up with a Shade of Green that has too much yellow, becoming Olive Green.[xx(]

The Darkest Green was applied on C&NW freight cars in the 1970’s. The 1970’s C&NW Dark Green never faded. It looks almost black compared to the 1980’s and 1990’s green.

All the Green CNW cars painted in the 1980’s were faded by the 1990’s.

When CNW Safety Yellow fades it become a sweet Lemonade Color.

I think you mean Beautiful Green…

.

From what I have seen all of the manufacturers have a different variation of the CNW green, Atlas does have the best match.

I’m quoting you to get another look at that car…

That ain’t a model! that’s a real one! [:)]

Back at disgusting greens…
CNW did have both open and covered hoppers in what I think was called “Pea Green” as well as the (WONDERFUL) standard green.
Another thing that I like about CNW is that I suspect that they had liveries using more colours (one at a time) than any other road. Viz:-
Std green
pea green
Yellow
Zeto yellow
Box car red
Weird Red
Black
And then there were bought in 2nd hand cars like the Route Rock cars. UP would have plastered the lot with Armour yellow. CNW didn’t have the resources and he result is great fun.
… and then there’s the issue of colour fade! (I’ve never seen one that’s gone OG though…)
Then again they use more colours for lettering than any other road and a huge variety of scripts which makes renumbering a nightmare. Never mind CNW is definitely the best [:p]
(That should start a flame war [:D] )

Thanks all! [:p]
