Dispatching and crews on trackage shared by competitors...

Where two competitor roads share trackage (like CN and CP in BC) who dispatches and how are crews assigned? Can a CP crew be assigned to a CN train and vice versa?

If the situation is called “Trackage Rights” then the owner of the trackage normally does the dispatching, while the tenant provides their own train crews. There are a few exceptions, from its purchase of the Milwaukee Road, the Soo Line (CP) owns a few miles of the UP’s Spine Line (ex-RI) but allows the UP to Dispatch it. Soo Line has rights ower the adjacent UP portions but doesn’t use them. The Soo Line does the maintainance on their portion.

With “Haulage Rights” normally the owner provides both Dispatching and Crews. This is the situation for Soo Line trains from Chicago to Detroit via CSX. Soo Line trains from Chicago to Detroit via NS are Trackage Rights and so Soo Line provides the Crews. Only one train still uses CSX, and then only because the contract has a minimum usage requirement. When the CSX contract expires it won’t be renewed.

Wow thats too bad. I miss those cp trains running through defiance. What makes it more interesting is when 1 railroad owes another railroad power hours. There was a cp train that came through with MRL power.Diamonds are also interesting. In Fostoria NS runs 2 trains across sometimes so they do not get stuck by “F” tower.

stay safe

That’s because they’ve already been stuck by F Tower and they’ve finally relented.
