"Displaying a cold steam locomotive is like displaying a corpse" quote

Hello people, i was wondering if anyone knew the source or origional phrazing of the above quote? Thank you.

Sounds like something DPM* would say, but I don’t recall seeing it recently.

I’ll keep looking,

Google led me to a thread in Railway Preservation News:

The contributor credits a Paul Merriman with a similar quote to the one you show.

Paul Merriman once said that “putting a locomotive on display was like propping up a corpse”.

Could this be the one you’re looking for? Paul Merriman bought the Southern 4501 and saved her from the scrap line.

Hope that helps, Ed

Never heard of it, Google didn’t look promising.

Are you going to the St Albans show on Sat?

Good luck,

Richard

When I saw the title of this thread I was hoping it was about “cold steam” live steam locomotives. These ran on dry ice and received their speed/direction controls through DC in the track.

.

I saw an O scale cold steam locomotive in operation at a Florida Live Steamers meet around 30 years ago.

.

I have not heard anything about cold steam since then.

At the risk of seeming to be a terrible cynic … there is a lot of money to be made in this world displaying corpses …
