I’ve read many threads about stripping paint from models using everything from brake fluid to alchohol. My question is, “How do you dispose of the various products after they are used ?” I have some Loco’s to strip and would like to have all my bases covered before I get at it! Thanks.
According to the MSDS for the Wagner brand brake fluid, no special disposal is required. Since it’s a liquid, I’d suggest getting some oil dry absorbant, or clay type kitty litter and pour the contaminated fluid into that, then put the absorbed brake fluid in a can, then in the regular garbage.
the paint you strip will come off in blobs and become dry and then just throw it in the trash can…I throw away any petroleum based substances in one of those oil reclaimation centers located around town…

I’m not sure what MSDS you are looking at, but that is not whast the one I have says. It says to dispose of it according to regulations or recycle it. I was in auto parts for 12 years, and our dealers disposed of it through recycling vendors. It is not legal to flush it or simply drop it in the garbage.
Well, I use the paint thinner until it is unuseable.
Garbage it goes. Ditto with glues etc… I dont know about the law but 30+ years I probably threw away less than 50 items of this nature.
I wonder how big an issue this type of disposal is from a Hobby Stand point.
I always loved the “dispose of according to regulations.” That means they’re too lazy to look up the regulations and print them. Brake fluid was originallly a combination of glycerine and alcohol. Not sure what the current combination is.
Mr Grant:
Don’t know where you live, but here the city government is responsible for trash pickup. They have a very specific list of prohibited items including “old paint” and “automotive fluids including but not limited to antifreeze, hydraulic fluids (brake fluid) battery acid…” Several times a year they have drop-offs for just this kind of material so as not to further contaminate things. The only old paint you can trash is acrylics and they have to be dried, not liquid. They have been known to go through the tra***o identify violators. Perhaps where you live there are not such regulations.
just use an old box and paint on the product let it dry out
it wont take long
I say dry it out
