I’d just like to tell the magazine staffers how much I enjoyed this article, a fascinating read.
I most heartily agree.
I left railroading before DP was being used in the midwest US. From what I’d heard from my still-railroading friends, DP sounded like a great way to run a train. Because of what I’ve learned in the Trains article, I understand how great it really is.
I’ve been meaning to ask a question, and since this is here…
I was rather surprised that the Locotrol articles failed to discuss the western Roads in the 70s and 80s in the history section.
Everyone remembers SD40-2 snoots with overlong short hoods. Those are to house the locotrol electronics. I believe ATSF, SP and UP all had snoot units.
It seemed odd that such an Iconic visual of western railroading would be missed. Perhaps, like in Sports, I should shout EAST COAST BIAS!
They act like BNSF Coal trains were the first time the thing was tried out west.
Also, Locotrol is a horrible brand name to try and say. no wonder they switched to DPU.
