Can someone tell me when ditch lights were first used on SD40-2 Loco’s?? As I notice from the pictures that I’ve seen that Broadway Limited have not fitted them on their new offering. I would have thought that the HLMX version, at least, should have them fitted…
Any thoughts on this would be wecome??? CPPedler.
(It is odd how a missed out word…(me)… can make a whole lot of difference to a question. sorry about that.
CPP,
I have no idea what this means… but thought I pass it on. By my house there are usually a couple of GP 38’s (sometimes a GP 40) from SP and UP. Most of them have the ditich lights configurstion. My thought is maybe they were added after production. I will go back and take peek and see whats parked over there and check for lights.
Best Regards

Go Eagles!
Rule was applied in March 1996 by the FRA and by December 31, 1997 any locmotive in the lead position was required to have ditch lights. You can read the Code of Federal Regulations here. http://www.trainweb.org/gyra/dc_lts.htm
Some US railroads used ditch lights on units before that (early 90’s).
[:D] Cool. Well that makes sense. Guess I have some work to do on some of my engines…
Thanks for the info ,Guys CPPedler
Cp canadian roads started using them in the 70’s biult in from the factory also the wide saftey cabs on Cn’s are factory equiped from mid to late seventies.as a side note CP/CN even put ditch lights on Mountain division f units really early on as rock slide protection these were removable but I’ve seen pictures of maroon and grey Cp f7’s with rock lights dating from the early 60’s Rob
