DIY Power supplies

Hey guys and gals,

I am building a HO model train set and am interested in building the power supply for it myself does any one have any circuit diagrams or advise that could help me in my ventures.

My experience was that I thought I would save money and build my own power supply. I ran across an article in a mag (can’t remember which one now) and took it to Radio Shack to buy the required supplies. When I priced it out, it was very close to a commercial power pack (I was looking to build one for DCC). I bought the commercial version.

Any hobby shop will have several books of electronics projects for model railroaders, including building homemade throttles as well as other projects like signals, sound, etcetera. If you’re into electronics there are quite a few projects that will keep your soldering iron busy.

As rsn48 said, the cost of building a power supply or a throttle can come close to the cost of a commercial unit. Try looking in your hobby shop for the 3 (or is it 4?) books on electronics for model railroaders by Peter J. Thorne. They are excellent books, with many types of projects, many aimed at the novice.
