DIY WORKING ON THE RAILROAD

Lou Sassi is on the program it is on now on the DIY channel. Great scenery master.

The program is certainly getting on its feet. At first, I didn’t know how much content there would be except for beginners (and this is NOT a put-down, BTW), but tonight’s show was very interesting for modelers in general, and the featured layout was just breath-taking. I’m really getting to like the show–just wi***hey didn’t have to interrupt it every two seconds for commercials. It would be nice if the DIY channel could get ahold of TRACKS AHEAD, also. That, along with the several railroad shows on RFD-TV would make a great many of us happy campers.

It would be nice if I got the DIY channel. You guys are making me jealous! [;)]

when is it on?

The only thing I didn’t understand was building the sidewalk/streets out of white styrene with the only coloring coming from the powdered chalks. It still looked too white to be realistic. Also, I don’t see many concrete streets. In fact, i can’t think of one off the top of my head. Concrete may be the initial surface but almost all get resurfaced with asphalt before too long.

Although I didn’t see the show, I expect the layout/scene was depicting an earlier time than the present. Prior to 1960 concrete streets and highways were very common in the United States. However, they weren’t durable over long spans of time and they generally couldn’t be re-surfaced easily, giving rise to the use of asphalt topping which could be recycled at regular intervals.

What does DIY stand for? I do get “Tracks Ahead” on NPT. They have a wide variety of topics. I like the modeling ones the best.

It’s 10:45 PM right now and i’m watching the program on the DIY channel…they’re giving a demo on city scenes…this is a really good program…just wish it came on earlier…chuck

DIY = Do It Yourself

Andre

It DOES come on earlier. At 7:30PM CST, I believe. It also airs at 10:30PM, as you have discovered. : )

Jeff

I had the same observation, White or even off-white roads is just wrong. Concrete, yes but not roads. Prototype, prototype, prototype.

Come on people.

I do have to say the guy can model…

I love the show.
Anybody notice on RFD that The Train Show hasn’t been on forever. Whathappened?
It is one of my favorites.

Rudy - I suggest that you go and examine some period photos from the 1930’s through the early 1950’s if you think that many urban (and highway) road surfaces weren’t once of an off-white tone. They most certainly were! During that period probably 80-90% of all urban streets and highways were made of concrete, brick, or cobblestone. Early highways, like the Pennsy Turnpike and various eastern Parkways, were all of concrete. At the same time, many secondary rural roads were of macadam or oil and gravel, not asphalt.

In actuality, the color of concrete when new was off-white tinged with grey. As the surface aged it became a very, very light grey tinged with tan (plus dirt, oil, and other stains, of course). However, due to the much lighter traffic load decades ago, automobile tires created a parallel pair of dark lines stradling the center of each lane, while today any darkening is singular and down the center of the lane!
