I recently saw a picture, on my newsreader (by Joseph Testagrose; coll. of Jeff Winslow), of DL&W B-B electric loco #4001. It was a dinky steeple-cab thingie, drawing power from overhead wires with a huge pantograph. The photo was labeled “Wallabout Channel, Brooklyn, NY ca. late 1930s”. I can’t find any ex-DL&W trackage in Brooklyn on my railroad maps. Any ideas? I know DL&W had a float terminal in the Bronx, at 149th Street, but I never saw any locos there. Saw the CRRNJ Diesel at 138th Street daily, for many years.
The whole map of that area was redone during? WWII when the Navy Yard got rebuilt (?); DL&W got kicked out. The 1924 aerials at nyc.gov would show the pre-1940 layout, but I can’t find them at the moment. Maps at nypl.org would show it too; if you’re interested I’ll hunt them up.
