The 2055 has the pill type smoke unit that still works. Is it really important I keep using the pills in the smoke unit? Would it burn out if I don’t?
Pill smoke units are pretty durable. You won’t burn one out even if you run it dry.
I use liquid smoke in my pellet smoke units all the time. It works fine, however don’t give them more than three drops of smoke fluid or so at a time-otherwise, you’ll run them over.
With that said, however, I just bought some reproduction pellets from Trainz.com. They work exceptionally well, and allow you to get that great pellet smell. They also beat paying $20+ for poor condition original pellets.

With that said can you put American Flyer smoke in the new and old Lionels?
Back when I was into American Flyer, a lot of the guys around here used the Supersmoke cedar scent in their engines. That’s also what I always used.
After rebuilding a few AF units that had been used with Supersmoke, I vowed to never use it again in anything. It left a gummy mess in a wick that was only a few months old.
If, on the other hand, you’re using the reproduction AF fluid that R.F. Giardina sells, I don’t think that it will cause a problem.
