Do you (and if so how) model snow?

Looking at the pictures of Mike Danneman’s Rio Grande layout modeled snow has rekindled an old desire of to do the same, though for me it would be in a New England setting on a small run down branch line. Of course never having attempted to model the white stuff, I’m always a bit skeptic as I’m afraid of how badly it would appear.

Do you model snow? What are your preferred methods and is it a permanent fixture on your layout or is it for photo purposes only to be vacuumed up later?

I have literally toyed with it, but just in small areas, and only temporarily for imagery.

I merely sprinkled Woodland Scenics ‘snow’ until it looked sufficiently wintery, and then took my photos.

I have modeled snow permanently on a section of my mountain tunnel. This is the Moffat Line.

First I put down the ground cover. Then I used Santa Snow, for Christmas trees. Finally I used WS snow and sprinked it all over.

Snow near the tracks is glued down using scenic glue.

I have had it in just over a year now, and it still looks great. At any time I can vacuum it up and do a fresh layer.

JFWIW, I always start with a test scene when I’m going to try something new, especially scenery. All yoou need is a fairly small piece of plywood and go from there. You can just temporarily glue a scrap piece or two of flex track to see how it will look. No need for ballast, cork, etc. because they are easy to visualize in snow, based on the rest of the scene.
