Do you dream about trains?

Here’s a topic that’s just for fun. How many of you have dreams about trains when you sleep at night?

I actually have a train in most of my dreams (either real or model), whether it’s actually important to the “plot” of the dream or not. I’ll often have dreams about buying or finding model trains.

I just woke up this morning after having a dream that involved trains. The dream started out with me in a creepy old building, but then it somehow changed into me being in a truck driving beside a railroad track. Out the window there was a small saddle tank pulling two CP heavyweight passenger cars and a couple flactars with lumber. I stopped the truck so I could get a picture, but I had trouble doing so and ended up running along side the train. Initially there had only been one track, but then a CN freight came very fast and I had to get out of the way. I looked and on another track there was an Ontario Northland train. Then I woke up.

I once heard somewhere that you don’t remember a dream unless you wake up during it. I’m not sure if ths is true or not. I guess dreams like this prove that railfans have trains on their brains all the time. Does anyone else here have dreams like this?

Thanks you for sharing you dream. I enjoyed reading about it. It is funny. It is funny how dreams jump from one part to another and sometimes there isn’t a connection between the two. It is also funny how people interact in the dream.

To answer your question. Yes sometimes I do dream about trains. Not every night but occassionally. Man if dreams came true we would have some wonderful 484 s still running the tracks and a bunch of good looking ALCos. [;)] GE, not even made. (Yeah I know, that is a good dream) [:p]

I had this one really strange dream once. It started out I was walking along some RR tracks, I noticed a train was coming so I started to run. I was running and running, but I couldnt get outof its way. Right as it was about to hit me, with horn blaring, I woke up. I wasn’t in my bed room anymore but the Living room.
So, I went back to bed. The next morning my mom told me that the other night I came running out of my room screaming at the top of my lungs: “OH MY GOD I’M GONNA GET RUN OVER!!” But thats just me. [:)][:D][8D][;)] True story.

John, you should know better than to be out walking on railroad tracks. It can be dangerous. Ha Ha

Every now and then I have the same dream. It isn’t exactly exciting but it is about trains.

Here is how it goes: I’m in the mountains and I’m walking down a steep hill and there is a train track next to me. The hill is way to steep for a train but anything can happen in dreams. I decide to balance on one of the rails. Then a train is coming and I can’t get off the track until the last second. It always goes that way.

Most of it isn’t very exciting except for the part where I’m stuck. I hope that I never get that close to being hit by a train ever.

By the way, I never trespass on railroad property. I have no idea why I go onto the tracks in the dream.

I don’t remember ever dreaming about trains, but I know my 2 year old does. I’ve heard him say “train” in his sleep two or three times. It’s very funny, and it’s the only intelligible thing I’ve ever heard him say in his sleep.

Thats a very good question[^]
I think i’ve had a couple of nighmares where i somehow end up on the tracks and see the train coming at me. So I try to run, but for some reason I can’t feel my legs. So i crawl from the tracks, and then i wake up. I’ve never been hit in my dream before. But I have some nice ones. But you have to know something first. When i was little (6 thru 12) we always used to go on our vacation by train.
(that was in russia). So we had to spend a night on a train. I never slept on the train, I looked out of the window the whole time and watched things by the railroad. So i had a couple of dreams where i rode that train, and it always seemed so real. But then I woke up only to find out it was only a dream.

I dream of six and eight unit trains coming around a curve.and there I am camera in hand.

Sometimes I dream im in a yard and then a evil train chases me then I wake up…lol

What happens if you die in your dream? I wonder

FireDragonLightning-
I have died in dreams before, so at least for me, dying in dreams does not equal dying in “reality”, unless I’m some kind of ghostly soul damned to spend eternity stuck on this rock.

I’ve had many train dreams, with two recurring themes. One is I find myself at the controls of a train travelling in an area that I have never been, know none of the pertenant rules, know nothing of grades, curves, speed restrictions, and yet am expected to be on time. Like most of my other dreams, the common factor seems to be frustration.
The other recurring drean is from childhood. In it, I am hanging out near the tracks where I grew up (Whitefish Bay, WI). As I sit there, a train is going by and starts to derail, but the derailment is like a model railroad derailment, not a real one. Each time I had that dream, the result (derailment) was the same. Even though, while in the dream, I knew what was going to happen, I just could not warn anybody.

Again with the frustration…maybe I need some therapy.

MOST of the time the forum IS therapy for me. MOST not always. [:p]

I do sometimes. My neatest RR dream had me hauling a cut of coal cars down a public street. [I have worked on street tracks in the distant past.] I’m running an Alco switcher, one of my favorites. We pull up some hills and around curves as I work the controls, just as I have done for real. We have a close call or two with traffic. Finally, we reach the plant to spot the coal, but the tracks run to the edge of the street and end at the curb! Lucky for me, at that point the dream is over. I never had to shove the coal back to the starting point.

Once in a while I dream the long gone Erie Lackawanna and Nickel Plate are running trains thru my home town.

On sat-sunday night, I had a RR dream. I was watching a train show, then I was in the left front seat of a car,and I saw 2 New Haven cranes, then went back to watching TV,and on the showthere was a curve in a 4 track mainline, and an orange& black locomotive with white writing sped by, the frame freezed and it looked like an SD-40 with pantographs, call number 43, and the white mark on the side looked like a CP Rail “pacman” with an arrow on the top and one on the bottom ends of the “mouth”. A man was about to say something ,but I woke up then.I’m drawing it for an art project for art class at school. It was COOL!

That sounds like the type of thing I would dream. I’d love to see that picture! From the way you describe it, I wouldn’t mind having a model of it to run on my layout. It’s funny how you sometimes dream about trains that don’t exist, I know I have. Generally though if I have a dream like this, as a railfan I’m very interested in there being such an unusual train and am excited and want to get a picture or remember all the details.

Off the top of my head, the one really bad dream I had with a train in it was of me being in a large station and a train pulling in with a beautiful blue steamer of the old Caledonian Railway. A guy from an open window in one of the passenger cars pulls out a machine gun and starts shooting all over the place. Thankfully nobody’s shot or killed, the guy just goes shooting aimlessly. Not the most pleasant experience, but that sure was a nice steam locomotive.

I don’t need to dream about trains. My nightmare begins when I go
to next job to repair the next steam locomotive or private car in which
the owner ran into the ground.

The only dream I recall ever having about trains was when I was a kid, and it was super vivid. Blue Santa Fe F-units rounded a high, super shapely curved trestle. Because it was so sharp, the power derailed, toppled downward, and landed way below. It was dramatic almost beyond description! And, believe it or not, was actually in color!

I had another RR dream last night. First I was @ school, I walk around ( and it had many great differences from in reality). Then I walk home(which in reality is 1 mi. away[80]) ,and I see a PRR locomotive in green coloring, with 2 cabs ( and looked like an F unit ), and behind it was a hexagonal passenger car in New Haven white-black-orange, like how I paint pics from paintshop.railfan.net , and then I was at home in my bed. and as my mom was walking in, I woke up. Isn’t that cool???

I thought it would be neat to have a train in a dream. But it doesn’t work out for me. Having studied psychology in school dreams mostly come from day residue. So for several days I thought and thought about trains all day each day. Turned out eventually one night I had a train in a dream. It didn’t last very long. So I gave up hope trying to dream about trains. It’s too stressful to force myself to have one of those dreams.

Well, the last several days I’ve been building consists in my Train Simulator and it’s very frustrating because some of these internet downloads don’t work right, the game crashes, and all other kinds of messes. I’ve been pounding my head [banghead] against that game for so long that last night I dreamt I was in the digital world building computer genterated train consists the hard way. I tried to escape but couldn’t. It was like a bad vision from the movie Tron.

No more train dreams for me, thank you.
