Do you sometimes feel you're overwhemed by this hobby of ours?

Couldn’t agree more. As the layout update was evidence, continual picking and poking, over time, yields results. Don’t get frustrated if you think you are moving too slow. This is a hobby not a race. Have fun, or do something else.

O.K. You got me, I am an real addict!

I’ve always loved building models of just about anything in any scale. I have just always loved creating miniatures worlds. I ended up spending so much time at it, I had to find a way to get paid doing it. I got luckey and was and have been able to do just that for 15 years now. So, I get to do it 24/7/365.

As I do get paid, I do have to keep deadlines (unfortunately), but for my own H0 stuff, I do take my time, I usually have 5-6 projects of my own at the workbench at anytime in addition to the “jobs”.

When I do get burned out on one thing I can always move on to something else. If I need to get away from the workbench, there always something to do on the layout. Occaisionaly, I will even venture tp the outdoors to see what the weather’s like (summer, fall winter??) or if it’s day or night!

Happy Modelling!

No… 3 reasons… First, I don’t care if I ever fini***he layout, it’s there for my relaxation and enjoyment. In fact, I know I probably won’t finish it. Second, I don’t particularly care what anyone thinks of it… If they enjoy the visit (online or in person), great… If not, that’s fine too… Didn’t build it for anyone else but me… Third, and most important, one look at the wallet tells me I can’t afford all the latest gizmos and gadgets so I don’t stress over them…

Now, I USE to get overwhelmed by it all… HAD to have the latest release of Everything, Then HAD to find space for all of it on the layout, and felt I HAD to clear it with the crew… Well, right now anyway, I’m the only one Of my crew who can even Run a train. No matter how many calculus equations I threw at it to try and maximize available space (and months on AutoCad), I came to the realization that it just wouldn’t all fit… So I sold a bunch of it off. As far as New release trains go, if they don’t say WABASH, they stay in the stores as far as I’m concerned. Even if they do, Post about 1946, they still stay there (saves me a bundle of cash)…

For me, when it becomes a vocation, It’s time to step away from it for awhile and do something else…

Long winded way of saying No, I don’t feel overwhelmed by it… anymore…

I’m not overwhelmed at all, I love technology. There is nothing that I enjoy more then building a kit, installing a decoder and playing around with the CV’s or trying to figure out how to get something to work. I did get a little frustrated in the summer but that was because I just couldn’t find the time to spend on the layout but winter is coming so I figure I have 4 months of MR time to work on the layout.

Ya Fergie, I know “just” what you are saying ( and feeling ) . Over the years, I have worked at a torrid pace on just about everything. Coaching LL Baseball for 15 years, Boy Scout assistant, Basketball coach, working 60 hours a week was the norm at my company ( semiconductors ), going back to school for BS and MBA evenings while raising a family of 4 ( with all the above mentioned duties all going on at the same time ). Then, when retirement finally comes near, 3 of my four kids & families move back home, one after the other ,while their homes are being built, two together for 6 months, living in the Family room and lower level of our split-entry ranch. It was called " El Rancho Grande" for 4 years. After everyone was moved out, I thought…NOW I can work on my layout, I was reading books, watching DVD’s, talking to you guys on the forum, …just trying to get all the info I could for planning what to do/not do. Was I able to start in HIGH gear? Nay nay, the wife had a the infamous “honey-do” jar, plus several major projects of my own that I could not do until the kids all moved back out.
Now…the benches are done, the foam is down on all but one, I have track, locos, wireless system, turnouts, plaster, molds, cork , etc all bought and ready to go, but…the holiday season is now upon us, so it is shopping with wife, string the lights outside, bring up all the boxes from the basement level, etc, etc. and to add to the list, grandson #2 of 9 grandchildren 2 to 17, is having trouble with school work, so Grampa is helping him after school everyday from 2:30 -4, with Math, Social Studies ( formerly two courses in “our” days called History and Geography ), and Science.
So I need to plan my layout, try to remember the best way to lay track…watch the video again? Read that book again? Check witht he guys again?..FRUSTRATED YOU ASK???##### FRUSTRATED???

Sometimes yes. I’d love to do a nice outside G scale thing in the back yard. One day I might just do it. (I’ll have to wait for Spring now, though) There’s no shortage of “How To…” publications out there. So I guess I’ll pick one up for beginners & go to town.

As long as I figure out my limits [space/money], make the most of what I have and enjoy that - I’m OK. Only when I start letting others dictate to me how to build my railroad, and worrying about whether or not they’ll “approve” of it - that kills my enjoyment in a heartbeat.

I will sometime but not now.
