I myself am a avid deer and turkey hunter. Turkey season starts Saturday and lasts into late April. I really enjoy getting out into the Georgia woods and being in nature. Its something some people cant do.
As for fishing, I dont fish as much as I hunt. We currently have 5 sets of property, each about 130-200 acres, with 6 ponds combined. I know this would be a fishermans paradise, but I dont think much of it. The ponds are stocked with Largemouths, Georgia Giants, Crappie, and Catfish.
Used to, but in SoCal hunting is too dangerous(to many hunters to small an area) and freshwater fishing is the pits(don’t care for saltwater fishing). [|(]
Buckeye, looking at your picture and the Chief’s avatar, has me wondering. Is it possible that you two guys are actually twins who were separated at birth? [:O]
Both. Shoot mainly varmits [beavers, squirells, foxes and such. Use to have rabbit beagles for 16 years. Bird hunted and deer hunted. Now, I mainly feed them. Fish when I can [two boats] but Pro Mariner trips all over the country and now Mayor’s job has prevent some of the fishing. I did bank fish today [at my pond].

You can’t beat pond fishing with an old cane pole for some nice Bluegil, some of my fondest memories. Not to mention that is THE best way to learn. [^]
.17HMR is a poloymer tipped jacketed .17 round on a necked down .22 Mag shell. Flat and super speed. Dropped a beaver at 75 yards. I have a Ruger 10/22 .22 with 3X9, .22 Mag Winchester lever action with 3X9, Remington 742 in .30-06 with 2X7, Remington 870 with 4 barrells [last with Rem Choke] [I bought this gun when I was 12, been reblued twice] which has been hunted hard and still excellent. Several handguns [two dating back to the early 1900’s]. My pride is Beretta .45 Cougar. The one I carry all the time is a 9mm S/W with 10 shot mag and 2 extra 10 shot mags.
Doug, you are right on the cane poles. I use ultra light for crappie and blue gills [bream in the South]. Got bream over 1 lb and crappie over 1 1/2 to 2 lbs. in that pond. Largest bass was 8 lbs. I put channel cats in and they are now 2 to 3 lbs. Fun.
Grayson,
I haven’t hunted in years. Used to go bow hunting with a friend but we never shot one… really just used it as an excuse to go hiking and camping.
As for fishing… oh yeah… and I see YOU HAVE BEEN HOLDING OUT ON US!!! 6 ponds with Large Mouth Bass… [V]
Last time I went fishing was in 1991 off the Texas coast. We were out all day from dawn to dusk. Around noon we hit a school of sea trout and were basicly dropping lines and pulling out fish. Shortest we kept was 18 inches, longest was 20, and of course kept them in the live well. After pulling our limit we headed out to deeper water. Dropped the lines and nothing hit for about 3 hours. Around 4:30 a line went snug, then the poll dipped… something big was on that there line… My friend’s son took the reel and for 2.5 hours fought one heck of a fish. When he finally got it on the boat we found a 36 inch red fish. We had some good eating the next few days.
In 1985 I went on a canoeing trip with my Boy Scout troop on the Alsabol (sp) River in the Upper Penisula of Michigan. We caught small mouths, large mouths, Northern Pike (best tasting fish when fried on a cast iron skillet with butter), and a few small walleyes.
Lake Erie we used to go for Steel Heads, Muskeys and Walleye. Those were the days. Still have my rods and reels but haven’t been out in a long while. Not su
Prior to retiring, and my hunting partner moving out of state, we used to go to CO every other year hunting for elk and mule deer. We also had leased land locally for whitetail and turkey hunting. With the skyrocketing lease costs in our area and not having someone to hunt with I’ve pretty well given up on hunting other than an annual dove shoot at the club he belongs to in Miss… Hunting public land is taking your life in your hands, all the idiots from the urban areas come out and shoot at anything that moves.
I’ve be thinking about starting to sell off my arsenal of the guns, and archery equipment, that don’t have any sentimental value and putting the money into trains.
I used to do a lot of deep see fishing, but don’t that much anymore. Do occasionally hit the ponds for some crappie, bass, but not all that much. I used to hunt all the time, mostly deer, dove, turkey, elk, mulies, black bear, etc. But I now usually only go once or twice a year. I hunt locally, but also go to Texas and Colorado. I have a neighbor who’s father in law owns a preserve in Africa and we plan to go soon.
As for weapons, I have a bunch. I have a mauser collection from the late 1800’s to the mid 40’s. I also have modern weapons from 22 short to 300 win mag. Several of my guns are custom made at the sniper weapons armory in Quantico. My furthest small game shot was with a 22-250 on a prarie dog at 518 yards in a 30 mph crosswind. Furthest kill on a big game was on a cow elk at 880 yards with a 300WM. I have won more competition with handguns, but I enjoy High Power Rifle more.
As to hunting, I actually enjoy the scenery and getting out for scouting just as much as getting an animal. I used to be a meat hunter in getting lots of does, etc., but since the wife and kids are not into wild game, I am much more selective and only go for something I am willing to mount on the wall. If it is not worth the taxidermy fees, I let it go. Have a Corsican Ram getting mounted now.
Not a hunter, but we’ve been having large flocks of turkeys wandering through the yard for the last month, so if I was…
We live on a tidal creek, so once in a while I’ll make a feeble attempt at landing a striper. Not sure about anywhere else, but in Maine you don’t need a license to fish salt-water from shore.
