Does anybody here own this video?

Good Day Folks!

I was thinking of buying this video, does anybody own this? If so, what is your opinion?

I own it. Got it a few months ago. It’s not bad. It’s a bit dated. I think it was made in the mid 90’s by Green Frog (http://www.greenfrog.com/bmrr_3dvdset.shtml). The layout is called the Apple Valley Branch. It’s a 6’x10’ layout (recalling from memory here) built in two section bolted together, on casters. They cover building the layout from planning (using CADRail) to operations. They give very brief overviews of all the aspects of planning, benchwork, track laying, wiring, rudimentary DCC (the DVD shows decoder installations in a variety of locos in different scales and set-ups), structures, rolling stock (building, painting and weathering), scenery and operations.

It’s a good supplement to the books already availalble but as a stand alone reference for the beginning MRR’r, sorry, but no. You’ll need some additional reference material. I’ve already been into MRR’ing for years and years now. I bought it since I’ve been on hiatus for the last 8 years or so and wanted something as sort of a refresher.

But for $20 it’s worth it.

I’ve got it as well. It’s okay, but not great.

  1. Pretty basic. It covers a lot of subjects but not in great depth.

  2. The DCC stuff is pretty dated. It looks to me like the videos were shot at least 10 years ago.

  3. Delivery is a bit stiff, and pacing is slow at times.

  4. Lots of middle-distance shots of the techniques. More closeups would be nice.

If you are new to the hobby and need basic instruction, these 3 DVDs for $20 is a good price.

If you are looking for a quality video series then follow the link in Joe’s signature and get his video series. It it the best thing you can do for overall quality.

I would also suggest Paul scoles video’s

And a must is Dave Frray’s - it is must own - the 4 part series…I would actually get these first

I know these aren’t $20 but if you are spending hundreds and more likely thousands of dollars on your layout, then have these experts show you the how to, in your home, over and over. It is well worth it.

Just my humble opinion

Good Day Folks!

Thanks everyone for the input on the dvd I asked about, I think I will pass on that one, and look into your suggestions. If anyone has anymore, please post. I will be starting my layout in spring, soon as I get my workbench built, and the garage organized.

Steven.

Just wanted to add, that I do have a few books, but I seem to learn better by watching.

I agree! That’s why I’m glad to see Kalmbach doing more video media material, and with the internet and affordable high quality digital video coming like the proverbial freight train, I hope to see more such material made available over the next few years.

I am a firm believer that print alone isn’t enough these days. If we don’t vigorously embrace the video medium, the hobby is going to lose the next generation completely. Video has the advantage that’s it’s very engaging, and it’s much easier to communicate an infectious passion for the hobby through video.

Where can I purchase the dream plan videos I hear so much about on the forums here?
