Does anybody know or is there a website . . .

. . . that explains the four-letter codes on unit coal trains? Recently I was at the Folkston “funnel” in extreme southern Georgia and saw trains go both ways with all cars marked “HLMX.” They were loaded going south, empty coming back up north.

BTW, trains are CSX on double track, diverging to Nahunta sub to the northeast and I believe Waycross sub to the northwest.

Thanks for any help or guidance.

This one looks good, as it can be sorted by owner or by reporting mark:
http://www.trainscan.com/data/mark/index.html
[swg]

http://www.railroaddata.com/

Might work…

The two sites I use:

http://www.nakina.net/report.html

http://www.railinc.com/docs/UMLER_MailList.xls

The first site is an historical reference, usually kept fairly up to date, and gives the correct names of the operators, and the era in which the reporting marks were assigned to those operators.

The second site is an official and current list of companies to whom correspondence should be addressed about reporting marks, and, as such, doesn’t necessarily give the owners.

On a side note how did you enjoy your trip to the “Funnel”?

LOVED the Folkston funnel.

For further info, check out my post called “HOW I SPENT MY WINTER VACATION.”

Thanks for the heads-up.

You can also select the RAILROAD REFERENCE button on this site,s red selection bar, pick ABCs of railroading, scroll down to select Understanding railroad reporting marks, go to end of article and click on related articles. That should do it for you.

http://www.railserve.com might be of some help.

Thanks, everyone.
