Does anyone collect "vintage" HO trains?

Of course!

That was one fantastic engine back in the 1950’s when it was released.

Engine 1988,
My second train set was a Marx road/ rail set in H0. Circa 1963 ish. It had a UP F unit in yellow plastic with black lettering. The only things I still have are a covered hopper and a caboose. I remember the motor was mounted on the rear truck, with a universal shaft running to the front truck. The track in the set was hollow tin plated rails on fiber ties.

Afaik, Marx made HO scale F units in Santa Fe, Rock Island, Western Pacific, Union Pacific, New Haven, and New York Central. There were also some special versions for (european?) battery powered sets that featured other liveries, but I don’t know much about them besides that they exist.

All this is taking me back… Set number 3 was a Tyco “Over and Under” set from 1969. I still have the GP20, and I run it from time to time. That was my best running engine, and the backbone of operations on layout #2. Not much else remains from that period.

I love my vintage O27 layout, but I am thinking more and more that some old HO stuff could be a LOT of fun, too. And I don’t even care about DCC and such for any gauge.

Here are two pictures taken in, I think, 1964. This an HO layout I built. The freight is a 1956 Gilbert HO Lackawanna diesel set #HO-310 with added cars. The Santa Fe passenger set is a 1958 Athearn with rubber band drive. The purple ACL set is Tyco, probably 1964.

Yes @AmFlyerTom that looks really neat

This thread has inspired me to get back to making posts for my thread on collecting Lionel HO.

It can be found here: Lionel HO 1957-1966, 1974-1978, 1989-1990

I just made a post about my 0605 saddle tank, there will be a followup coming.

I don’t collect older trains but I did get this Gilbert B&O locomotive in an auction lot of Athern blue box’s. Oiled it up and it runs good. The light works. It’s shaft drive. I think it’s from the late 50s or early 1960s.

It cleaned up pretty good.

Also got a Mantura Vandy tender. It is metal. Not sure when it was made but probably not to old….

That looks cool :sunglasses:

Thanks for sharing @Jeffcb10 those look really interesting. I have been seeing some neat stuff from all of you on this thread

My friend bought one of those Vany tenders new in the '80s from a train shop; it was in a different box, but it looks like the same piece. Like a lot of Mantua, I guess it went through several issues.

I will check it out @BN7150

The Gilbert B&O F7 was actually manufactured for Gilbert by Varney.

The only difference was the Varney version had frame mounted couplers, so Varney was happy to put Gilberts name on the one part that was different…

Sheldon

Are frame mounted couplers better?
