Out of curiosity, does anyone have Walthers’ Champion Packing Company on their layout? If so, are all the walls molded in redish-brown, or do you have to paint them that color? The reason I’m asking is that today I bought the American Hardware Supply kit by Walthers and the walls are molded in an off-white color. Not having and airbrush, I am going to have to paint all the walls a brownish color and then go back and paint the concrete parts of the walls a gray. I’ve already started on 2 walls and it’s very tedious.
BTW, are airbrushes easy to use? Any info out there would be appreciated.
The Champion Packing Co. is molded in reddish-brown.
I also have built the American Hardware Supply Co., and, yes, the business of painting the brick one color and the concrete another (on both of these structures) is tedious. But the end result is so-o-o-o much better than unpainted plastic.
There is a realistic alternative, and that is to paint one or more (or even all) of the walls antique white. That was done on some buildings of this type of (curtain wall) construction.
Oh, there was no way I would’ve left this kit unpainted. I know (I hope!) the end result is worth it!
As to the second question … yes. Airbrushes are easy to use. In fact, they are easier to use than spray cans. It’s much easier to control the paint with an airbrush.
Airbrushes are great for structures, rolling stock, trackwork and scenery.
Get one. Learn how to use it (not hard at all). You’ll wonder how you got by without one.
