Does anyone here model Cape Cod, or Coastal Mass? Just curious if anyone modeled this area besides myself… From what I know, there doesn’t seem to be anyone, although I believe a 2006 issue featured a track plan which ran from Boston to Provincetown…
I had seen someone who modeled some Mass Coastal engines, and rolling stock, at last years Springfield MA, train show. I sure wish I knew who that was! I’ll bee looking for him in a few weeks for sure!
Are you thinking of the Narragansett Bay and Navigation Company?
I’ve seen them in Hartford and more recently in Marlborough, MA. This is an ON30 club. They have a Free-Mo like modular layout which is a joy to see. The hand-laid track, salt-marsh scenery and steam era equipment combine to be a very attractive package.
No… Although I did see it last year in Springfeild, thats not what I was asking about. That’s based on Narragansett RI, as far I know… Attached are pictures of the models I was refering to.
John Pryke models the New Haven on the cape. I forgot the name of the booth, but that person specializes in New England shortlines. I may be doing several Mass Coastal units for a client in the near future, and will upload pictures of those if/when they’re done.
For historical modeling purposes, take a look at the February 1960 Model Railroader article called, “The Sociable Old Colony Lines” by John Armstrong. It has an “around the wall” layout design and interesting operational notes.
For historical prototype purposes, take a look at the NHRHTA and their magazine, the “Shoreliner” which has many articles, pictures, and issues about Cape Cod from before 1969 when the New Haven RR was taken over by Penn Central. www.nhrhta.org
For modern information, I’d suggest the various forums over at Railroad.net. Or the NERAIL e-mail list and photo website at: http://photos.nerail.org/
The guy that has all that New England Shortline stuff has been there for 20 years or so. He’s only a display…he never sells. And quite frankly I wouldn’t buy what he’s got in the 1st place. He always (and I mean always) uses gloss finish for all his modeling (not good). He is also not the world’s best decaler with crooked lines and letters being the norm. Many times his custom decal work is simply painted on the model with a brush (like his Fore River Transportation B23-7’s he has…he made a green dot and scribbled two white “esses” on them even tho’ one’s supposed to be a road and the other a railroad track). To give him credit, he does a lot of stuff you won’t find elsewhere…
I don’t know anybody that models it, but I work with a guy that works for Coastal Mass on his time off from our jobs as tug engineers. He is a part time fill in Conductor.
Can’t say that I model Cape Cod, but I couldn’t resist modeling a compressed version of the two Cape Cod bridges. We have our Summer home near Falmouth Mass. One interesting feature of the model is that adapted Slot Car track spans the bridge on which Faller Car System Buses, trucks, and cars pass over it to get to two towns. Bob Hahn
