I’m looking for a sound decoder to put in an old Walthers SW1. I did a successfu install of an SDN136PS with an iPhone 5 speaker and I’m happy with the motor control and sound. I don’t like filling the cab with the decoder and wires though. I built an interior for the cab and modeled the fireman’s side door open and I’d like to be able to use those details.
This decoder looks like it will fit where the lightboard/weight is but I’d like to know for sure before I buy one. I emailed Digitrax and Yankee Dabbler and have yet to receive a response. I’d like to finish this project before the end of the year.
Here is a video showing a Loksound Select Micro install, decoder and speaker all fit under the hood, nothing in the cab. Not the easiest guy to follow, but you can see in the video where the decoder is in the middle and the speaker over the front truck.
The N scale Digitrax board replacement will be narrower, but much longer than the Select Micro - basically the length of the N scale Kato SD40 it’s meant to go in.
I’d say 2 7/8" long and 5/16" wide. The instructions say to mill a 1/2" diameter hole in the bottom of the frame, where the fuel tank goes, for the 13mm (0.51") and use a dremel to tweak the hole, so the speaker fits snuggly.
Using the picture of the board on the Digitrax site, the board is approximately 5 1/2 times the diameter of the speaker, or 71.5 mm, or 2.83", which is just short of 2 7/8".
