does anyone make Ho scale rotary couplers????????

does naybody make these, i recall hearing baout somebody making some months ago, or was i just imagining things???
please help

Could you describe what a “rotary coupler” is/does exactly?[%-)]

it will allow rotate the coupler head rotates 360 degrees to allow them to be unloading in a rotary dumper

I’ll be shoving mine thru one-at-a-time uncoupled, life’s too short for me to try to build something that complex and have it work flawlessly. If you succeed, my hat’s off to ya![bow]

From what I have read, those new Sergent couplers are incompatible with all other brands, so you have to use only them on everything. Even the Sergent company’s Web site mentions this incompatibility.

The rotary couplers at http://members.trainorders.com/pmack/couplers.htm even look like they would work pretty well.

My neck is getting sore from shaking my head in disbelief. (The older I get, the more I do that. Haven’t been able to read a newspaper in years without looking like a wobble doll.)

Regarding the rotary couplers. While at the train show during NMRA convention in Cincinnati last month I asked the people at the Kadee booth if they have ever considered doing a working rotary. They replied yes and that they had done some of the design work but were holding off until someone made a working rotary dumper. I then went over to the Walthers booth and asked them if they had considered re engineering their existing rotary dumper kit as a working model. I told them what Kadee had told me. They said they had considered it but it was not under current consideration. So if you want a working rotary dumper and working rotary couplers let Walthers and Kadee know . If the Lionel guys can have one what can’t we HO scalers ?

I liked the idea of a rotary dumper and train, but my model era didnt really have many at that time, coal trains were manually dumped with your standard hoppers.

I decided not to try doing a rotary instead do a put/take operation, and never really show the unloading operation, or loading…

Should I do, it would be static.

Its right to have non-compatible couplers because the unit trains rarely were broken up.
Just have kadees on the operating ends. My put/take operation would hardly ever break a unit train, and its an easy way to have a long train going rightaway hehe.

Dumping cars with rotary couplers requires a larger dumper and more horsepower to turn the cars. Without rotary couplers the dumper turns the car on the car center-of-gravity which for a loaded car is higher than the coupler centerline. With rotary couplers the car turns on the coupler centerline which is below the center-of-gravity. This makes the dumper larger (greater diameter) and harder to rotate.

Never ceases to amaze me just how informative many of these threads are. I’ve been involved with model railroading since the late 1940’s (Lionel trains first - then HO, etc.). Anyway, I never knew such a device existed up until I read it here.

I’ve got the Walther’s dumper - it’s on my marination shelf. One of these days…

In 1998 while in Omaha, Nebraska, a local hobby shop had a powered Walther’s rotary dumper on display. You could push a button like the KD coupler display, and a train would push a car into the dumper, the clamps would come down and hold the car, and the dumper would rotate. When I asked the owner what kind of brand of coal car had the rotary coupler he said that he had had a number of special Kadee couplers made especially for him (didn’t ask who made them for him) so that they rotated like the ones referenced further up in this thread. I don’t know if that hobby shop is still around or if it still has any of the special coupers.
I too asked Kadee at the NMRA Convention about rotary dump couplers and got the same answer–when someone puts out a rotary dumper and there’s an economically viable number of sales then they’ll be happy to produce them.

Another tidbit of info for ya’ll. The cars equipped with rotory couplers have the end with the rotory coupler painted a different color so that end can easily be seen for train make up, etc.If you’ll notice in the link above the rotory coupler is on the end thats painted white and also if you notice the fullsize coal trains that all the cars are facing the same direction.
