I have a lot of Peco Insulfrog turnouts. I am wondering if anyone manufactures a replacement frog that is metal, so that it can be wired as a true, LIVE electrofrog?
I’ve seen DIY videos where people use aluminum foil or tape, or conductive paint, but these seem to be more of a band-aid than a real alteration. I’m looking to remove the plastic frog and replace it with something metal that can be wired appropriately. I know I could build something from scrap rail pieces, but looking to see if there is already something available before I try to re-create a wheel.
(My other option is to install keep alives on my locos, but that will defeat my “fail-safe dead-zones” on my lift out approaches!)
I’m surprised to hear you are having issues with the frogs on Peco turnouts as they are so small. What locomotives are you having trouble with? I don’t know of anyone who makes a ready replacement for those frogs, but I would try eBay and maybe Etsy as starters.
Details West makes cast manganese frogs in code 55, 70 and 83 in HO scale; their website has a catalog with many options. Whether any of those frogs are currently in stock is a good question. It might be worth a call or an email to Details West to see if the frogs are available, and where you can order/buy them from.
My previous layout (and the new one I am currently building) have around 120 Peco Insulfrog turnouts and I don’t have any issues with locomotives stalling.
Maybe it’s a problem with your locomotives/wiring?
The March Railroad Model Craftsman has a nice article about Peco turnouts and locomotive wheel issues. Boils down to the taper or lack of it on the wheel. Also includes a fix to get around the problem. I’ve found all Peco products to be highly reliable.
