A friend and I went down to CSX’s Cumberland, MD facilities a few days ago. It was a fantastic trip and enjoyed seeing a the railroad action.
I also noticed that CSX had a banner stating that CSX employees wish everyone happy holidays, along with some decorations hung up on the sides of the banner. Also I the hedges outside the facility that are trimmed in the shape that spells CSX was covered in Christmas lights.
On our way home we cruised by the Juanita shops on our way to see a friend and we noticed Norfolk Southern had no decorations out at all or any acknowledgment . I do not know if they plan to put anything out or not. The only decorations I see are some Christmas lights on ALTO Tower during the holidays. Course this may the be last year for that. [sigh]
Oh well, maybe someday. I will see them decorate the big sign in front of the shops.
I assumed that, but thank you for pointing it out. I still wonder if they are aloud to conduct such actions or whether or not it is “encouraged” by any means. [:^)]
NS in Atlanta has a festival of trees every year in the building lobby. Each floor’s safety committee puts on an elaborate display around a theme. It often gets local press coverage. They also invite a local HO modular RR club in to set up and run for a week. Inside, every floor has some decoration. Wreathes in the elevator lobby and poinsettias elsewhere. Some floors also do trees on their own.
Let me know when you find a ‘yardstick’ with which to measure “Christmas spirit”, too . . . [:-^]
Well, does either or both railroads have ‘relief funds’ for the benefit of needy families in the region ? And/ or other activities in the spirit of the season that might not be quite so evident ?
I was just wondering if NS actually did anything to acknowledge the season. I mean what oltmannd cited counts and other holiday activities would also count. I just never really seen a railroad acknowledge the community celebrations in such a way and can not really say I have seen NS actually do such activities in their northern territories.
In 1992 CSX borrowed the UP’s 3985 and adorned it as Clinchfield 676 to head that years Santa Train. CSX continues the Santa Train tradition that the Clinchfield originated.
Christmas spirit may vary between terminals. However NS did run a make a wish special from Cleveland to Toledo with their executive units. Both railroads do charity work.
