But seriously, Ford is cool. My dad had a '73 Mustang with Suicide doors, a light shade of green, beautiful… Hey! Ok, let’s get back to model railroading.

I’ve got a 2000 Mustang in Performance Red (sorry, no GT) that I absolutely adore. I realize that it is very pathetic for a 51 year old man to be driving a car like that, but I don’t care. It’s the best darned car I’ve ever had!! It is coming off lease now and I plan to buy it. I’ve never done that with a leased car before, but I just can’t think of anything I’d rather have than my 'stang.

(Well, Maybe a Cadillac CTS, but that has to wait until my daughter is out of college.) [:)]

My sister has a 4-cylinder (tee-hee-hee) Grand Am, the water pumps broke on it twice, it’s drivin by the timing belt so if you don’t have everything perfect, the engine’s worth about as much as a pile of rocks, cost her $635 to go fix it, my dad (who’s very experienced with cars) didn’t even want to fix the sorry thing.

I use to own a Mustang 5.0LX - Very fast and very fun - Now I drive a minivan. I’m greatful I have wheels!

I don’t know if mustanggt really owns one or not, but I DO!! It’s a 1985 5.0 4 Barrel('85, the last year of the carburetor) with a 5 speed, and 2:73 locking differential. IT ROCKS. I also have a 1986 Mustang LX Convertible( put the top down for screaming at the tourists[:P]). And for you GM guys… I believe it was [bow]Carroll Shelby[bow] who said “Every boy grows up and outgrows his BOWTIE” Don’t be mad at me, because they are ALL made by MAN, therefore they ALL will fail sooner or later no matter who built it!

I’m sure there have been plenty of 4 cylinder MUSTANGS that have had water pumps break too.

Seems like every model railroader I know is either into fast cars or fast bikes. I’m no different. Have a '71 Mach 1 Mustang in the garage for those no-snow days. No AC though. That way when the sun gets too hot I have an excuse to hide out in the basement with- you guessed it- THE TRAINS!

I own a 79 mustang. It’s basically my long term project car. I did have a 88 GT. That thing was fast.

Right now my dad’s got a car that out paces the Mustang anyday: a Cadillac CTS V. It’s got a corvette engine in it, baby! Look out ford, Cadillac’s coming back better than ever!

MR and fast cars that could be something there: Among others I had a 1969 Pontiac Firebird with an 8 cyl. 350Hp engine, I had a 1977 BMW 2800, and an 1978 Alfa Romeo GTV2000,
all nice and fast, but in country nowadays packed with speeding camera’s a Volkswagon Transporter does fine.

I’ve never heard of a 4-cyl. 'Stang! Maybe I should explain the problem a little better. The car’s water pump is waaayyy down underneath the engine, and as I mentioned is run off of the timing chain, and the car is front wheel drive. The pump would be a sun of a gun to get out without breaking somthing else.

Only, everyone bashes Fords, but how many Ford-bashers have actually had one, and how many people who are Ford-Bashers own a Ford they never take care of? We’ve had a '93 Mercury Sable for 11 years, all we had to do to it is replace the tires and battery once, and replace the gaskets on the engine block. No Ford my dad has owned-and that goes back to '69Torinos, 1980s T-Birds, an early '90s Rangers-have we ever had a problem with. My only point was people think GM’s are faultless, when they’ve had just as many (if not more) mechanical problems than FORD.

=). ok I will allow myself to talk fast cars here. In the early 90’s I had a 71’ Ford Torino GT with the 351-M cleveland engine that had a High rise manifold and headers. I bought it cheap, put a 750 Dual pump holley (4 barrel of course) and numerous other upgrades and fixes.

It would not take off very well (There is a way to powerlock the converter at 3500 or so and let the tires go) but it shined at 2900-4800 RPM I could catch anything on the top end. The Glass packs exhausts ultimately did me in as State troopers lived in the county I was in at the time and they would visit my place of work for coffee and ask how fast that old car can go. And give me certain stretches of rural roads to slow down on due to noise at night. One could hear me 1/2 mile away. The Michelin 225’s by 60 r14’s on there were murderously expensive but they have never ever failed me on a tight back road curve.

There were other cars classics that were on the road that summer and there were a few on the spot meets to see who was top dog. There was a 71’ Dodge Charger with the 6 pack and a Firebird with a blown out 454 V8 shoe horned into it that would show me dust and smoke. However for a 30 year old car at 132 mph at 5200 RPM with another 500 RPM to go before absolute red line was not too bad.

As fast as I thought I was there was a friend of mine who had his Mom’s Pontiac Ventura I think a 78 model. I used to beat him with a 4 cylinder everywhere he went. Ultimately he was to swap the engine, transmission out and replace it with a custom engine that put out something close to 500 horse and 350 pound of torgue and a Super snap transmission on it. Click click and off you went. That car was a Monster Incarnate.

It was so fast and full of power you had to stand on the brake with both feet while pulling out of a parking spot, the slightest touch of the gas sent you past 30 mph in maybe 40 feet. and about 170 in less time it takes you to catch breath. Too fast for me even thought I love watching
