I remember back in 98 when they put in the new rail here, they put in new turnouts with an “American” self propelled crane, my grandma and I sat in the old Cadillac on the side of the highway as we watched them change them out at the north and south ends of Junland Siding, about 2 miles from here.
CN quite often uses panel track to replace rails in my area. No wonder VIAs don’t go fast on the line…I’m not sure how much ribbon rail is still on the Grimsby Sub.
Cannot panel track be welded together at the joints? If not why not?
yes it can…and alot of times they do… most of the time pannel track is a stop gape effort to repair damagned track after a derailment…they just lay the pannles in bolt them together…some tamping work…and its in and ready for traffic agin… and at some point…they might come alone and weld the rail together…or if MOW is scheduled to put new rail in sometime in the near future…they will just leave the pannel rail down with the joints and replace it all with ribbon rail at a later date…

The only time I have seen the railroads other then CN, leave panel track down permanently is at crossings. I saw CN crews do this in person on Glendale Av where I live and it was very cool too. They also put some heavy-duty black rubbermaid like material down that was pre-fabricated to fit in between the rails for the cars to go over.
