I was reading the book Realistic Model Railroad Operation by Tony Koester and wanted to see a GoogleEarth view of Wingate, Indiana, the small town he used as an example for local switching operations. But when I zoomed in, the satellite photo didn’t show any tracks going thru.[:(] Yet when I viewed the town on mapquest it shows a rail line going thru labeled “Norfolk & Western”.
Can anybody from Indiana tell me what’s up with Wingate?
The tracks through Wingate (and on most of the old Clover Leaf division) were torn up between 1980 and 1990. Some of the line exists as one of four shortlines, but they’re short chunks of the old main.
If you’re looking for more track charts of Wingate, try the NKPHTS; they’ve got the official RR maps for the entire division available for purchase.
