Does the Trains.com website seem slow to anybody else lately

The banner page loads up normally, but then there is a long wait for the rest of the page (the content) to appear. Maybe 5-10 seconds. Seems to happen on the Trains forum, the Rochelle Recent photos page, Newswire, etc.

Anybody else notice this in the last 3 weeks or so?

Yes. It does load very slow, even with DSL.
Allan.

Cable here, only 4.5 seconds.

Only the Forum listings are slow to load.

Check the member list at the bottom of the page once it all loads up - I’ve seen some pretty large lists of participants there. Sometimes I find it very fast, other times I move on to other activities (like if I’m at work and just stopping in for a quick look).

There are a number of variables that can affect the “speed” of the site, some of them no fault of Trains.com at all. In fact, the problem could actually be on “your” end, if there is congestion on the network (even DSL and cable) that you use.

One reason that all of the banners, etc, load up more quickly may be because the images are “cached” on your computer, so they don’t have to travel over the network at all.

…Yes, several times yesterday it was so slow it timed out, bringing up the page of “unavailable”, etc…and I had to start over.

Funny, I don’t have a problem… Loads up quick, even if I happen to come on at peak times…

I used an Apple yesterday and it was much quicker than my IBM at home on DSL. Could Kalmbach be using Apple tech. and the conversion is what is taking the time?

I’ve noticed real ‘lagginess’ here at times, just these past few weeks.

I’ve had a few instances where after several seconds of waiting for the page to load, it times out, defaults to an all text screen with an appology and instructions to contact Kalmbach admin, but then I just reload and the desired page usually comes through then.

Comcast made some major changes to their system April 1, and it’s been giving their users all across the country slow spells

And I think there might be a domino effect going on.

As their lagginess ties up servers everywhere, it slows things down for others.

I’m with Comcast, and on April 4-6 my connectivity was the pits all around, seems better for me but I noticed last night they still have some customers still suffering through the worst of it.

Yes, it’s been slow here too. It’s been getting worse and worse too. I get page not available messages a lot now too and have to refresh. And yesterday I had to reboot once because it locked up with the trains banner and nothing else. This forum is the only one that I go on that is doing this.

Not likely. If you look at the URLs for the forum pages, they are all ASP pages which is a Micro$oft product. Someone running a website off a Mac or Xserve would be more likely to use PHP to generate web pages.

WTF- Today it’s takeing as much as 1:10 to load a page and I have got page unavailable 6 times today.

Perhaps the pages would load quicker without all the avitars, pictures, drawings, cute and witty musings that seem to fill most of the messages. They add nothing relevant to the messages and talk about your waste of bandwidth!

Please understand this is not directed at any one in particular, none of the elements previously mentioned are pertinant to any of the messages posted. They just take up space.

Let’s make our point without all the window dressing.

This was also, almost exactly the same message that another forum member delivered around three or four months ago. At that time almost everyone had adopted some type a moving avatar, and large elements at the bottom of their messages/posts. It was mentioned at that time that the crux of the problem then was that the moving elements took up very large portions of band width. I don’t pretend to know anything about band width, but in the aftermath of that post practically all the moving elements disappeared, and the pick up in speed was incredible and very noticeable.
There do not seem to be very many of moving elements at this time, but there seem to be a lot more forum members showing up on the role at the bottom of the page.
The slowing of the site seems to me to be spotty, nothing at a particular time of the day.
Receently, the “Page not available” has cropped up more often, than usual.
My service at home is a dial-up and if anyone would have normally slow service, I would be in that catagory.

Actually, when the message window says “waiting on www.trains.com” or my personal favorite : “waiting on ads.kalmbach.com/…” there is a fat chance that user graphics are the root of the problem.[2c]

Ive noticed it both at work and at home…We have braodband at work and dial up at home…Just seems to take forevvvvvvverrrrr…

IF user graphics were causing a slowdown on my end, wouldn’t changing my user profile to not show them, speed up things on my computer?

You mean like all of the adds like google?
