dog houses

anyone out there have any photos of interior shots of brakeman dog house,s that were on coal tenders on some eastern roads?? thanks

Have never seen an interior photo of a Headend Brakeman’s Dog House, but they were pretty rudimentary, windows that may or may not have opened, and many were heated with a steamline from the locomotive or maybe from the area of a stoker motor or tender booster( if the loco was so equiped.)

Otherwise you would kind of use your imnagination, but you can bet they were long on utility and short on creature comfort![:'(]

here’s a photo of an installation on the tender of a K-36 mike:

…I have not tried, but I’d suggest describe {in many ways}, a dog house on Google and you just might pull one up…

I seem to remember them on yard engines {Pennsylvania RR}, with the slooped tender…Dog house at the slooped area.

Here is anolther style of doghouse. In the right wind conditions, they must have made for a very smoky ride!

Their only purpose was a place for a brakeman to sit that was out of the weather when not performing switching duties.

Other than a bench seat, the only creature comfort may have been a steam heater. Some models may have had a telephone link to the cab instead of resorting to whistle signals.
