A dogbone is simply a double track loop-to-loop layout. Virtually any double tracked plan can be converted to a dogbone if you have room for the loops. On larger layouts, the loops are hidden staging yards and to save space, the loops can be stacked. That is what I have done with my layout. On smaller layouts, the dogbone is usually folded. You usually can’t afford to hide that much space so the loops are often left open or partially hidden. Again, the loops can be stacked to save space. The big advantage of a dogbone layout is that trains can be turned at both ends of the mainline without having to fiddle with the equipment or back trains in and out of a wye.
