During the glory days of post WW II streamliners, the Dome Car was one of the featured enhancements to the trains operating through scenic territories. The following web site http://trainweb.org/web_lurker/WebLurkersDOMEmain/ is devoted to those cars.
I notice that it hasn’t been updated since 2010. Is the creator of the site still with us?
Thanks, Balt.
As an aside, perhaps, I cannot see calling a car that does not provide straight ahead or straight behind vision a "dome’ car. Thus, VIA’s Panorama cars are not dome cars, even though they do provide more vision above. The long and semi-long (SP) cars do fit the description, for they do provide limited vision ahead and to the rear.
The “windows-in-the-roof” Seaboard Airline lounge cars were an attempt to provide some semblence of a dome-car for restricted-clearance trains into Penn Station, for the Silver Meteor and Silver Star. I believe one survives as a private owner car.
A 1967 article in TRAINS, “A Twist on Tuscan Red”, includes a side-level view of a proposed car for New York-Washington service similar in appearance to SAL’s solarium cars.
Does anyone know why it appears that the web site has not been updated since 2010?
