Don't throw out your Christmas silver paper back wrapping paper!

I’ve been experimenting with paper back tinfoil wrapping paper and making rock walls with them.

And it works!

  1. size out the piece you’ll need
  2. add 30% to the dimensions and cut out
  3. Decide what direction you want to orient the rock structure in
  4. crumple, compress and recrumple the tin foils paper until you get the desired effect
  5. spray with white primer and let dry
6)spray high expansion insulating foam on paper (back) side of tin foil paper and gently place in location.

let it stand over night to cure before further painting.

It doesn’t look bad at all when I get pictures I’ll post them.

The following picture is using craft paper and the same method, the tinfoil paper has sharper rock edges

Now there’s a good method, Fergie!!! I may have rock walls on my layout (Wyoming is full of canyons and cuts). Thanks for the great tip!!!

Hmmm good idea, do you think that this method would hold its shape if it were used to cover removeable access panels in the sides of mountains tunnel’s etc.I have never used the spray foam, does it get brittle?

Is the spray foam meant to “Glue” the tinfoil rock to the framework?

Good idea! A neighbor is building his layout, I’ll suggest that to him. Great form, even if it doesn’t have sharp edges.

Greg

great idea

Since it’s that time of year I’d thought I’d dig this out and recycle it again.

Fergie

Excellent idea, thatnks for the revival! (And excuse to make my 2000th post)(w00t)()
On to buisiness…is this on the same principal as newspaper, and could it be used either way? Is the wrapping paper sharper and harder? I can see it happening both ways.
And it looks a bit crude, I suggest rock casts with Sculptamold for extra detail, after you get the Plywood Pacific into the Rock Ridge Central.
