Don't understand why this is happening

I’ve posted earlier about my burnt out decoder due to a turnout not fully operating. Well here is the facts.

I assembled a temporary layout using Atlas True Track. Atlas True Track turnouts are acutally snap track turnouts with roadbed attached. I have eight turnouts on the layout all came with the twin coil switch to operate them.

I have a staging area all of two tracks. One entering from the east and one from the south. All the turnouts were working fine during testing. Then the turnout going to the east staging started not completely closing when going straight through. It works great for the diverging track that goes to staging but when you switch it to run straignt through it only goes half way.

I’ve changed the swich machines (all Atlas Twin Coil’s) three different ones with no difference. I’ve changed the turnout (Atlas True Track) three different ones with the same outcome.

How can three different turnouts and three different twin coil’s all end with the same problem. all stop about half way only when returning to going to the straight through route?

All seem to do fine if not hooked up the the layout. I’ve checked the table for kinks or anything that would bend the turnout but it is fine. You can move the points with your fingers with no resistance. Yet when hooked up to the twin coil it won’t go fully to the straight position.

Any clue’s?

Thanks,

Bill

You shure are getting your share of elec. troubles all at once.

If the points move freely and you have the same results with changing to known good coils, then the problem would be in the wiring or the swich throwing the turnout. High resistance, poor connection, or a bad wire could cause the problem. The coil isn’t getting full voltage when thrown in that direction. Jump leads from another machine to test.

Yea, last night was a burn up night for me for sure. First the decoder burnt up.

Then while trying to get to the loco I leaned over the table not realizing I was also pressing down on another twin coil switch that also burned up.

To top off the evening I was warming up some left over pizza in the toaster oven and fell to sleep, waking to the stench of burning pizza.

Luckily today the temperature was in the upper 50’s. I opened the windows to air out the house.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Bill, Sounds like there’s nothing left to smoke, so now you can have a Merry Christmas…
