After a very successful remodel I find myself left with 22 hollow core doors that look better as potential modules or dominos than they ever did as doors. I mostly model in N-Scale and city and trolley being primary interest but quite a bit of H-O equipment has lept into bags at The Hobby Stop here in Orem. The doors range from 26 to 36 inches in width and are all standard height. I remember reading about the Miami Modular Maerklin Club putting together N-Track length portable display layouts using these doors. Also I have photo reduced 4x8 layouts into 3x6’8" doors for N scale. worked well and light too. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I just started a new N Guage layout on a door 8x3ft, no problems to speak of, I am at the ballasting stage now, did give the door a coat of paint first.
I have built a 20x40 foot HO scale club layout and my home layout on hollow core doors, and wouldn’t consider not using one. Most doors are coated against moisture absorption and don’t require as much framework support as plywood or other material. I glue two 1/2-inch thick layers of Upson board (sound board) on top for sound deadening and to make it easier to use sewing pins to hold the track in place.

Great advice! (Wish I’d thought of it about 15 years ago.)
While I can’t offer any original ideas, I do agree that a door is an excellent starting point for an N scale. This photo shows a small closet door with a “roundie-roundie” layout. With some terrain and scenery, this could make a great small layout.
Actually, I’m working on my second N scale door layout right now! The first one was great… the portability is awesome. I took it to shows and even moved with it. The new one is under construction and can be visited here:
