Double heading postwar steamers???

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if there is any easy way to couple tep PW steamers together for double heading. I had wanted to do this a few times, but could not find a place to anchor some sort if coupling device on the solid front cow catchers.

Thanks,

Jerry

There was a CTT article a few years back that described two ways to do this. Maybe someone can find it.

Hi Jerry,

You would have to fabricate something yourself for this.

Maybe you could consider making a coupler bracket out of thin sheet metal (brass may work, but steel would be better) that folds under the front pilot and is attached to a couple of the underside mounting screws. This preserves the loco from destructive modifications. You could mock up what you need with cardstock (i.e. an old manilla folder) before fabricating from the sheet metal. The cardstock when unfolded yields you a pattern.

I am always saving thin sheet metal sections (and other stuff) from junked small appliances, printers, tape players, etc., just so I have a source of material.

Regards,
Roy

I remember that article. You did have to grind on the loco body. It was a couple of years ago. I do not have time to dig it out.

Port Lines has a coupler that will let you double head without modifications. There is a picture and one could fab one up.
