double main wye turnout

I have 2 main lines running parallel. I want to add on 2 more main lines that are perpendicular to my first main lines. I figure to accomplish this it will take a wye at the end of each of my first mainlines followed by 3 crossovers and 2 right hand turnouts and 2 left hand turnouts. Mt question is if anyone can follow what I have just described could they then give advice as to what # the wyes’ and turnouts should be and what degree the crossings should be. My model is Ho gauge code 100 track.

What you are describing is half of a grand union used by streetcars. See here for a picture http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_union

The size of the turnouts is dependent on what size locomotives and cars you are operating. This in turn will determine the crossing sizes and how much space you need. The larger the turnouts and curves the bigger this junction will be. I suggest you get the free trackplanning software from Atlas and lay it out.

Enjoy

I have an old Atlas Custom Line book “LAYOUTS, HO Scale Railroads,” in the back it has a double track wye listed for their sectional track. I would think a newer book would have a similar diagram. Hope this helps.

Good luck,

Using the atlas software I came up with something that might work however they don’t give you a ton of track options for code 100. The only way I could make it work was to use all turnouts and flex track and I had to start with the three crossovers in the middle of the union. I wish I knew how to post the file to see if anyone could improve my design or simplify it. I want to keep the turnouts as big as possible because I one day hope to get a UP big Boy on the layout.

The degrees of the crossings would depend on the turnout numbers. Once again the real recommendation would depend upon what size of equipment is being run.
