Double Stack Cars

I want to insure I have enough clearance for them so can someone please advise me how high they stand on the track with cork underneath them with 1 container stacked on top of another.

TIA for the reply

It depends on the scale. For HO, I’d give 'em probably 5 inches just to be safe. With N, more like 2.5 or 3.

The Narrow Gauge Man

I measure 3-1/2 inches from bottom of cork. This is with Mid-west cork, Atlas code 83, a Walther’s double stack car (one of the ones that came as a kit). The 3-1/2 inch includes about 1/4 inch clearance above top of upper container. This is HO.

A couple of years ago I asked that same question here and got some wisea** answers from some super posters. I didn’t have any doublestacks then and needed to know what the clearance was. I used 3 1/2" for ho clearance over the railtops with cork. N gauge should use 2".

Figuring that prototype containers are 8’ high X 2= 16’ and they ride about 1’ to 1 1/2’ above the rails makes them 17’ to about 19’ above the rails

Sorry yes I am looking for sure, sure & it is HO scale [:)]

OK just want to be clear that at 3 1/2" they will clear the track underneath them with cork & track + 1 container on top of another

OK thanks a lot for ur info

I model in HO scale and have several intermodal double stack well cars. I am in the process of doing an over under track layout with the top becoming a bridge and a certral point of my layout. My layout is not permanent so I wanted to find out how high the track would need to be for my double stacks to safely clear under.

With my well car sitting on power track with two 53’ containers stacked, 3 and 1/2 inches left plently of clearance. Power trac is just as tall as track on road bed cork.

Thanks 3 & 1/2" it will be. thank U all for the info

Use a 2x4 as a clearance guage.
