‘Downeaster’ route finishes tough month

“Damn the public, shut down the railroad and fix the tracks”
Baron de Raile

Once the much needed track work is completed, the Downeaster OPT should be improved.

How can the ridership numbers be up when they haven’t added any frequencies. and the trains are running with anemic-sized consists? Forget how thin the Brunswick service is, the Boston-Portland frequencies are too thin to make this service credible.

The first eastbound doesn’t arrive Portland until after noontime. There are three and four hour frequency gaps. And stunningly, there is a five hour gap in eastbounds in the middle of the day between Trains 683/693 and 685/695.

Most train sets are four cars (Business/Cafe+3 coaches) and one, possibly two trainsets, are equipped with an extra coach. And there is absolutely no hope of NNEPRA getting more equipment unless Maine decides, one its own, to ante up and go out for new construction. Good luck with that.

If they are claiming increased ridership this many years after startup and with running four car trains, then they must have been running half to 1/4 empty to begin with.

How about painting a unit in heritage colors, like Maine Central or Bangor and Aroostook.

No more Whoopie Pie for you!!

This trip is on our bucket list!

I know people complain about multiple posts of the same entry. I’ve had problems early on when the computer was slow and I wasn’t sure if the post was successful, so I hit send again. Patience solved my problem. But I have to congratulate the gentlemen who managed (7) “Best part of a ride” posts with a very similar (4) “A fun part of a ride” posts for a grand total of 11; count-um, 11 total posts possibly setting a new Trains record. It’s got to be a computer issue (I hope) or Joe is someone who gets REALLLLLY excited when going to Maine! My apologies Joe for finding humor in all the duplicate posts, I too get excited about returning to Maine; my homeland.

I second Sean Fielding’s idea to have a unit in heritage colors, maybe even two: Maine Central green and gold and Boston & Maine red and gold.
