I have the SEARS mastercraft version of the Dremel… can’t remember the model #, but I find the attachment I use the most is the Flex-shaft. I also use sanding bits more than the cut-off wheels.
I’ve had my Dremel for about 10 years or more. It is a model 285 with two speeds. The slower speed is still too fast for some things. [xx(]
I use the drill bits and the cutting discs mostly. [:)] I hadn’t used it for several months and recently went to use it and couldn’t find the attachment that holds the discs! [banghead] I’ve checked Wal-Mart and noticed that there doesn’t seem to be a replacement as the cutting discs, they have now have a different hole for the attachment. [:(] I guess I’ll check Radio Shack.[:-^]
The different hole you refer to is known as EZ Lock. This is a quick change out system that will eventually replace many previous Dremel “wheel” attachments. All you need to buy is an EZ Lock mandrel #EZ402. I’d advise buying two.
I believe HD and Lowes still sells the original mandrels although you may want to invest in a new set of collets to ensure proper fit. If push comes to shove, contact me off-list and I’ll send you one of mine.
Send them to me. I’ll make use of them.
I’m from Hollywood (Broward Co.) but now live in Naples (Collier Co.). Both neighboring counties of Miami-Dade.
They have the old mandrels too. Might have to buy a whole set of attachments but their cheap. Also, did you try Loews and Hobby Lobby? They both carry Dremels and accessories.
Loathar, Good idea. There is a Hobby Lobby in our area as well as a Lowes. If Wal-Mart had the old mandrels in a set I would have bought them. I’ll have to check out the other places also.
I have 2 model 395 variable speed multi pro with tons of accessories. The newer tool came with an LED light attachment that I really like.I have every kind of cutting wheel, sanding disk, polishing wheel ect. you can think of and I use them all.I still do most of my work with hand tood though. Walter, Ican also provide you with a mandrel for your cutoff wheels if you can’t find one.Canadian Tire here sell a great accessorie kit for the Dremel. It is a 1000 piece kit that comes with tons of cutters, router bits you name it. It is regular $99.00 but goes on sale every 3 months or so for $50.00.I am sure it is made by Dremel or whoever makes their accessories as everything looks identicle to the original. It is a great deal. Comes in a real nice case too.Ron
I have a cheapy rechargable Craftsman. I love it when it keeps a charge but it looses power way to quick. I don’t think I will ever purchase a cordless again.
I had an old Sears cordless model which was always running down quickly. It worked ok for MRR work but for anything else it was useless.
I got the 400 XLR last Christmas. I use it for everything from cutting bathroom tile to automotive work. I use all of the bits / accessories except the polishing stuff. One of the best tools I own.
I still use the same Dremel tool that I bought back in the mid 80’s. It’s a model 395 type 5 variable speed tool. I mostly use the cutoff wheels and drill bit sets. I replaced the Collet fitting with a three jaw chuck about twelve years ago and have had no problem with it. I’ve heard others say that the chuck loosens as it turns but I’ve not had that problem, rather just the opposite. Sometimes I have to use a vise grip to loosen the chuck, as it tightens while in use.
[#ditto] Variable speed 395 with a chuck is what I use also. Never had a problem either way with the chuck however, beats changing the collets all the time. Use cutoff wheels more than any other single item.
