Drew’s Trackside Adventures: Episode 19 - Rochelle, Illinois
Looks like you had a great trip “south of the border”. Northern ILL definitely has the reward for rail fans. A trip to the Rochelle diamonds should be on everyone’s to do list. Drew, be encouraged to send your stills into UP and BNSF for their respective employee calendars.
Drew great video. I bookmarked the Trains Rochelle IL webcam and it is incredible. I just have one question… how does anyone living in this town get any sleep?
drew, awesome as always keep it up !!!
Really superb images throughout this video clip, really, really nice. Hey Drew, you take an excellent photo, Kalmbach should print a special edition called " Trackside with Drew- a photographic journey"
awesome video !!! How about a New England in the Fall Trackside Adventure!!
Good job, Drew, as always. Love all your informative comments. This Burlington Junction ry would be a nice topic for a feature article in MR, with track plan for a shelf layout, description of industries and motive power. Thank you and keep it up!
Thanks guys! Rochelle is indeed a most-see location for railfans.
Nigel, in the meantime I’ve put together a bonus gallery for all to enjoy at:

Drew
Just a few miles further south and you could have caught BNSF trains passing the historic CB&Q wood depot at Steward Junction, where the Milwaukee Road split off from its trackage rights on the CB&Q from Davis Junction through Rochelle (hence the Milwaukee Road caboose at Rochelle).
I want to know why the MRVP crew couldn’t find photogenic cows in Wisconsin.
I notice that “your” rail lines are still unfenced, particularly at grade crossings the locomotives look huge.Properties seem to border the track. At what point does the Railroad claim ownership of the roadbed? Of course in the UK large green or gray spiked metal fences are required to keep the staff from wandering off the job…
Great trip Drew! Scratched Rochelle off my list a few years ago, awesome memories!
Looking forward to you and the crew coming to Texas, we have some great spots in the DFW Metroplex; Saginaw being a great place. We also have photogenic cows and longhorns!
Really nice! I have been able to visit Rochelle twice and think the railfan park is the best thing since sliced bread. I’ll have to remember that bridge out near the intermodal facility.
If you want to see more of those old retired boxcars, there are two in Malta, IL sitting on old steel barrels. Malta is about 6 miles west of DeKalb along IL 38. They are between third and forth streets on the south side of the UP mainline through town.
Thanks everyone.
Devin, the longhorns will definitely be included whenever we make it down to Texas!
Another great Trackside Adventure video, Drew. Thanks. Any chance you might take us to the UP Evanston Subdivision sometime (from Green River, Wyoming to Ogden, Utah)? It’s the area I’m modeling.
Great one Drew. You need to tell whomever at Trains Mag to go down to Rochelle and remove the spider web over the web cam.
Drew, thanks for sharing your flickr photostream - really inspirational.
New subscriber, great videos! The frog you captured was looking for a turnout. Once stopped in Rochelle on the way to Oshkosh.
