Drew’s Trackside Adventures: Episode 24 - Florida East Coast revisited
DTA 24 was worth the wait. Love the drone shots.
Drew as usual, another great video. Those shiny GE’s look great but unfortunately they ended the variety of power that made FEC a neat railroad, ex UP SD40-2’s, both regular nose and snoots, 2 schemes on the '70M-2’s.
Excellent video Drew and great photography as usual !
Another great one, Drew! Man, you are getting good at this! I just love to watch everything you put together. You make it just enough fun for everyone to get into. Heck, you could put these on TV! Make it a half hour reality show on the History Channel. A lot of people would watch it who aren’t even interested in trains, but the trains ad a neat focus, a reason for being, and your commentary and big mug make it real friendly. Cheers!
Back again, Drew. Another fantastic video! - Yes, You need to take this show on the road. Just like you do it now, with your commentary, telephotos, close-ups, stills, chasing trains, telling the adventure, getting stuck in the sand, having problems, having successes… (maybe more train sounds)…Take it all over America and Canada… But I want to see you go around the world! Europe, India, China, South America, and everywhere and anywhere. I want to see you not only on the mainline but on the run down back waters. Old steam south of the border before it is completely gone! Old lines that are being revived! Man, this thing will never end for you! You’ve got a style and folksiness that will sell! You’ve got it! Go for it!.. But, when you become rich and famous, don’t forget where you came from and who your real friends are. Cheers!
Drew,
Great shots in not so great weather of our favorite Railroad the Florida East Coast Railway. It was worth the wait!
Thanks,
Mark
Simply outstanding Drew. Great camera work and good mood shots in the early fog. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Drew, you show the Auto Train as #98. Normally its #52 north or #53 south. Was it changed for this day due to the reroute.
Drew, well done! Maybe your best work to date. It just keeps getting better!
Great episode Drew. I have a favour to ask of you. In a future episode are you able to show/explain the lineside signs (e.g speed/caution/temporary restrictions/etc)put up by the railroads. I have tried serval searches and come up with lots of steam era information, but nothing contemporary. It would be a great help for a modeller on the other side of the world. Thanks and stay safe. Jason
Loved the shots that you got as they would make for good postcards or even in a calendar for those that love trains as much as you do. I would love to buy it if they were made.
How do I fond out about train schedules if I want to do some rail fanning in my area?
How long did you guys really wait in the Florida sand? Don’t you know to carry sections of 2 X 6 for such occasions? I hope you learned a lesson!
Hey Drew, Welcome to Florida! As you showed, we have some great spots to watch trains. As I live in Tallahassee, I end up watching in Cordele, Ga.(CSX and NS) and Hahira, Ga.( NS at speed). Another good place is the yard at Baldwin, Fl. Excellent video, really enjoyed it and hope you come back this way.
Thank you, everyone, for the great comments! My producers (Kent Johnson in this case) do a fantastic job of connecting the video-to-story dots to create the final product. This is a perfect example of a band making great music. I’m just honored to be the front man.
John - We were stuck there for a few hours. We tried boards, palm fronds, decorative concrete slabs, whatever we could find laying around. In the end, however, the “Jeep” Liberty just wasn’t built for the sand. It was only rear-wheel drive! Lesson learned.
Thomas - I’d start by checking online communities. Many local fans have an idea of their respective railroad’s operations. In this case the FEC is scheduled by nature which helps immensely but we also had a great tour guide - thanks to my friend, ETH!
Jason - I will keep line-side sign explanations in mind next time we come across them. Good idea!
Anthony - You’re right. Our mistake. Thank you for the correction.
Also, don’t forget, I will add some more photos from the trip to the Drew’s Trackside Adventures flickr page:

Once again, Drew: awesome video man! I grew up 6 blocks away from a rock quarry, so I am excited about the next episode!
One question. How the heck do I get a job like that??!!
Good times! Not great weather, but we had fun with it anyways!
The intercutting of video and still images displays the best attributes of both. While I’m sure the there have to be compromises in rendering the video for streaming, the quality is impressive.
I appreciate the voice-over commentary: relaxed, informative, conversational, well written and delivered.
Well done!
