In MR’s Great Model Railroads 2005 there is a scene with very realistic dried grass as a feature. What material/s were used?
Otherwise -any suggestions?

It may be a material called Silflor. Joe Fugate used it on his S.P. Siskiyou Line.
I agree with you, it looks so real. The color you saw is called Golden Grass. Grass in the south-western part of the USA is green in the winter and spring but turns a gold color in the hot summer months and is actually still alive.
It’s easier to find Silflor in Europe than in the USA. However, Scenic Express carries it, but it is not shown on their web site. You have to order through their catalog. If you search the web you most likely will find it in Europe. Here is such a web site EurobahnTrains.com. Being in S.A where European made models are common, you may be able to order it from your LHS (Local Hobby Shop).
Generally modelers in the USA have been using fake fur. However finding a fake fur with the correct color and does not shed is somewhat difficult. I did buy some fake fur from Mendals.com. Their camel color comes close to a tan wheat color.
