Hi Guys, I want to build some drilling rigs, & pumpers 4 my HO layout. Has anybody built same? & has anybody got plans for same.?? Can the pumpers be operating? I have a oilfield patch I want to fill in.
Also I would like to build a Scale model Drilling Rig Circa l930’s-40’s of a conventional Rig with 4 Superior 8 cyl.Diesel Engines in 1/2" Scale. Can anybody help me here. Thanks, Boxcar Willy, or should it be Rufnek Willy?
Any help here would be deeply depreciated! (Opps wrong spelling) Thanx.
Try the Canadian Petroleum Institute and the Canadian Association of Oil Well Contractors, If I’m correct the rigs at this time were not portable but built on site and some were left assembled to service the the hole, I’m not sure when the influx of portable truck mounted rigs became popular. Also try the Glenbow Foundation in Calgary , Alberta.
Thanx very much for the info, TATANS. I’ll follow up on it. Much deppreciated. (Opps rong spelling). Boxcar Willy.
Also try : American Oil & Gas Historical Society at www.aoghs.org there are great photos and plenty of access to their site.
Boxcar Willie,
Although it’s N scale and I haven’t seen the article, there may be something useful in this article citation I found at the Index of Magazines
Modeling a Drilling Rig Scene N Scale, January/February 1994, page 35
( DRILL, OIL, “STEFANEK, DAVE”, WELL, NSCA )
Have you tried a Google search ? I would look in one of the softbound manuals on animation for ideas on how to make it appear the pumpers are actually working.

American Model Builders makes a great drilling tower kit. I have a buddy who built one and it looks great. There is a Walthers pump that casn be motorized to with it.
