Thinking about taking a trip to southwest this summer. Has rail action taken a big hit along I-40, in AZ, anybody?
I haven’t been up that far east recently, but most likely yes. I’ve seen fewer trains during occasional visits trackside to the main lines out of the LA area, including the BNSF Transcon.
Traffic has dropped off considerably on the Union Pacific Sunset Route through southern Arizona due to the economic slowdown, so traffic through northern Arizona on the BNSF is probably the same. The railroad is using this opportunity to perform track construction and maintenance.
From my observations many of the trains are shorter and faster.

I live along the Coast Sub and traffic is very slow. The locals are dependable and well as the Starlights, but other than that I do not see much…or hear much. I don’t even hear whistles at night and I’m super close to the line.
Here is a question, since most trains on a given line go to different ending points, wouldn’t the trains still be there but just shorter? I know I can probably figure this one out anyway but thought it might make an interesting discussion.
